Though engineering is the IITs’ flagship course, students can also choose from a variety of other options. There are numerous speciality programmes, master’s and PhD studies available at 23 IITs around the country, and admission is available through national level exams such as GATE and CSIR-NET. There are also management courses available after passing the CAT. More than JEE Advanced, here are several other options for getting into an IIT.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISC) in Bangalore and seven IITs – Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee — jointly conduct this exam. Students who want to pursue a master’s or doctoral degree at an IIT can take the GATE exam. After passing this exam, a candidate can apply for MTech, combined MTech-PhD, and PhD programmes in engineering and related fields.
This exam covers a wide range of subjects, from basic sciences to engineering. Candidates can choose a discipline of their choice based on their undergraduate speciality. The exam is three hours long and consists of 65 multiple-choice questions.
The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) primarily administer this online exam for entrance to their business administration programmes. The IITs, on the other hand, admit applicants to their management programmes based on their CAT results. Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability are the three sections of the test.
The CSIR-NET offers research fellowships to candidates who desire to learn from faculty members or professionals from IITs, university departments, and national laboratories in a variety of subjects. Candidates who are awarded a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) are also considered for lectureships or assistant professorships.

This exam is held at the IITs for MSC, PhD, and other postgraduate programmes in seven disciplines: mathematics, physics, chemistry, mathematical statistics, geology, biology, and biotechnology. Candidates who pass this exam are also eligible for MSc programmes at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER, Bhubaneswar), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and other institutions.
This exam, which is administered by IIT Madras, allows candidates to apply for admission to five-year integrated MA programmes. Development Studies, Economics, English, Environmental Studies, Film Studies, Health Studies, History, International Relations, Philosophy, Politics, and Sociology are some of the disciplines provided by IITs under the humanities and social sciences stream.
IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee are two Indian IITs that offer BArch programmes. A candidate must pass the JEE Mains and Advance papers, as well as the AAT, which is administered by the Joint Admission Board of the IIT JEE test, to be admitted to this degree.
